Parliament
Parliament is the legislature of Æfira and has supreme authority within the Kingdom, subject only to the Constitution. It consists of three components: the Sovereign, the House of Lords (the hereditary nobility) and the House of Commons (the elected representatives of the rest of the nation).
The current Parliament is the Seventh Parliament of the Kingdom of Æfira, which convened on 10 October 2023.
The law of Æfira can only be changed by Parliament or under Parliament’s authority. King, Lords and Commons must all consent in order to make laws. (Or, if a bill is passed unanimously by both Houses, it becomes law without the Sovereign’s assent.) Acts of Parliament have the full force of law in Æfira, and are binding on Æfiran citizens even outside the country. Parliament also has power, with the approval of two-thirds majorities in both Houses, to amend the Constitution.
Bills (proposals for legislation) from the Third Parliament onward are published by His Majesty’s Stationery Office. Some draft bills, which have not yet been introduced in Parliament, have also been published. Command papers – Government reports, proposals and other documents presented to Parliament – are available online as well.
