Public Holidays
Ten days are recognized as public holidays in Æfira under the Public Holidays Act 2016. These are days of national celebration; they are not regarded as working days for legal purposes, and debts which fall due on a holiday need not be paid until the following day. Private businesses may or may not choose to close on public holidays.
1 January | New Year’s Day |
11 January | King’s Birthday |
1 May | May Day |
6 June | Æfira Day (commemorating the founding of Æfira in 2007) |
21 June | Midsummer Day* |
9 August | Indigenous Peoples’ Day |
4 September | Constitution Day (commemorating the enactment of the Constitution in 2008) |
21 November | Friendship Day (celebrating friendship and cooperation among Æfirans) |
21 December | Midwinter Day* |
Accession Day (the anniversary of the reigning Sovereign’s accession to the throne) is also a public holiday, but is not celebrated during the reign of King Maximilian as it coincides with Æfira Day.
* These holidays’ official names reflect the seasons in the northern hemisphere, where Æfira was founded and where the majority of the world’s population lives. This is not meant to slight those in the southern hemisphere, for whom 21 June is Midwinter and 21 December is Midsummer.
