Flags of Æfira

The national flag of the Kingdom of Æfira was adopted on 4 February 2009 under the Flags Act 2009 (since replaced by the Flags Act 2013). It may be flown by both private citizens and state entities on land, and as a jack by all Æfiran ships.

The national flag is white with a blue fret (a combined diamond and diagonal cross).

In heraldic terms, it is a banner of the national coat of arms: argent a fret azure. (The royal arms, which may only be used by the Sovereign, are quite different.) The flag is in the ratio of 1:2 – that is, its length is twice its breadth – and the width of the fret is one-sixth of the flag’s breadth. There is no record of who originally designed the flag, but it is known that the fret was selected as a simple and distinctive national symbol, relatively free of religious or political connotations.

In addition to the national flag, there are Æfiran flags for use at sea, by the King and other public officers, and by the armed forces. If multiple Æfiran flags are flown together, the order of precedence is as follows: the Sovereign’s flag, the national flag, the naval ensign, the state ensign, the civil ensign, the civil air ensign, flags of foreign nations (in English alphabetical order), and private banners of arms.
